Arizona still among 10 fastest-growing states - Arizona's population growth may have slowed dramatically during the recession, but the state still ranks among the top 10 in its growth rate, according to the latest estimates by the U.S. Census Bureau. The estimates released at the end of December show Arizona's population increased by 1.48% between July 2008 and June 2009 to nearly 6.6 million. That growth rate would put the state at No. 7 in the nation. Still, Arizona's growth rate was exceeded only by Wyoming (No. 1 at 2.12 percent), Utah, Texas, Colorado, Alaska and Washington during the 12 months. The western region grew by 1.23%, the most by any region and far above the national rate of .86%.
